They’ve done the 80s and the year they were born, Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder. This week, the younger contestants get a chance to sing music they should know well, as the seven remaining finalists on “American Idol” will perform songs from 2010 or later.

For someone like 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez, it’s a great chance to excel without having to overcome the learning curve of an unfamiliar song.

Theoretically, all of the contestants can pick a song they know well. It’s another week that the producers are giving the finalists an opportunity to shine. If you are one of the people who say song selection matters. Judge Randy Jackson will say it doesn’t matter, they just have to sing the heck out of whatever they choose, but then five minutes later, he will tell someone they chose the wrong song.

Of course it matters. Some songs fit some contestants’ voices better than others.

Kinnelon native Elise Testone, the oldest remaining performer at 28, did not have a good week last week. It’ll be interesting to see how she reacts this week when it seems like there’s  a real chance a shaky performance will put her at the bottom when the voting is announced on Thursday.

Then the drama builds: Would the judges use their save on Testone?

Who do you think should go this week? Who are your picks for the Top 5?
